Acknowledging your fellowship
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) program encourages Banting postdoctoral researchers and host institutions to acknowledge and promote the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program, administered by the Government of Canada.
Acknowledgement to the agencies support for your research or other science-related activities lets Canadians know where the government spends their money and fosters an appreciation of the important role funding plays in making good science happen.
As a recipient of funding, you must acknowledge, verbally and/or in writing (depending on the context), the support you receive from the tri-agency and the role it has played in your research.
This applies in the following cases:
- conducting media interviews, speeches and presentations at conferences and workshops;
- receiving an honour or award;
- creating conference or workshop materials, web materials, press releases and other media materials; and
- submitting publications, project reports, monographs, videos or films and other outputs of the research project, citing the name of the funding opportunity.
When possible, make acknowledgements in English and French. For more information, consult Canada’s Official Languages Policy
Acknowledgement statement
You can acknowledge our support in many different ways. Here is some suggested wording:
(Program logo) The (name of program, project or event) is/was supported by the (agency name) (Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Social Science and Humanities (SSHRC) or Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)).
The Banting logo and/or organizational name can also be placed in an acknowledgement list with other partners/funders.
Remember to mention that you are a Banting Postdoctoral Researcher in any documentation related to your scholarly activities (e.g., in the promotion of speaking engagements, at conferences or workshops, in biographical notes, in materials for the media).
You may use the title "Banting Postdoctoral Researcher" or “Hosting a Banting postdoctoral researcher” in any scholarly activities and publications produced during the term of your award.

Performance Measurement and Reporting
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) are committed to demonstrating results to Canadians for the funds invested through the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program. Therefore, processes for performance measurement and program evaluation, as well as for monitoring progress and appropriate use of funds have been established.
Banting postdoctoral researchers will be expected to:
- contribute to the review and evaluation of the Banting program and associated policies and processes by participating in evaluation studies, surveys, workshops and audits;
- provide data and/or reports upon request so that Vanier-Banting Secretariat staff can assess progress and outcomes during and after a postdoctoral researcher’s tenure of the award; and
- contribute to trajectory studies to assess the long-term impact of the Banting program.
Banting postdoctoral researchers must complete an end-of-award report as well as two follow-up surveys (one, five years after their fellowship has ended; the other, ten years after award tenure). Results from these documents allow Vanier-Banting Secretariat staff to measure the performance of the program. With the consent of the postdoctoral researcher, these results will also be used to highlight success stories.
The names of Banting postdoctoral researchers and other basic award information will be published on the Banting website.
